    PBS Kids Learning Hour is an interactive event designed to give parents and caregivers the opportunity to learn alongside their children. Kids and their parent/guardian will watch the PBS kids show Elinor Wonders Why, chat about it, and explore some fun related activities!

    This is a two-hour program that will take place on the Weaver Lawn, weather permitting. Please bring a blanket to sit on. The program will be moved inside with masks if it rains. (Masks will also be required if we need to be inside just to watch the movie, so please bring a mask for each child and adult just in case!) For children ages 4-7. Please register below!

    Mindfulness is the ability to be fully present, and aware of where we are and what we’re doing. It is a state that everyone can achieve, and in this learning circle we will practice how to access it. When we’re mindful, we reduce stress, and gain insight and awareness through observing our own mind.

    A learning circle is a free study group for people who want to learn new things with others. This learning circle will meet for 90 minutes once a week for 5 weeks via Zoom with just 12 participants. The active participation of all members is vital to the process of exploring various resources and learning together.     Members of the RISPCA team are presenting three humane education storytimes with Miss Pam and Miss Sharon at Weaver Library this summer! The storytimes will include a visit with a live animal from the RISPCA shelter. Kids will learn the importance of being kind and compassionate toward animals, and questions will be welcomed at the end.

    These storytimes will take place on the lawn at Weaver Library on Thursdays, July 8, July 29, and August 5, 10:00-10:30, and are geared for ages 3-8.

    Registration is not required. Bring a blanket to sit on. In the event of inclement weather, these events will be postponed.

The Civil Rights Movement in the United States is entering a new and more difficult phase. The Space Race heats up. 

    Join us as Evan Weiner joins us for a virtual talk to discuss the historic year that was 1961. Evan is a speaker, author, with a radio and TV background. He has about 25 topics and has spoken globally. In 2007, the Department of State sent him to talk to foreign nationals at the George Bush Presidential Library in College Station, Texas to speak about the politics of sports business in America.

    Devices will be distributed on a first come, first served basis at the times listed below.   • Becoming Muhammad Ali on the lawn at Weaver Library 2pm

    Living Literature, now celebrating its 25th year, presents a 30 minute, readers theatre
    version of Becoming Muhammad Ali by James Patterson and Kwame Alexander, the
    Kids Reading Across Rhode Island’s 2021 book selection. This presentation is performed
    by Marlon Carey and Phoenix Williams.

    Before he was a household name, Cassius Clay was a kid with struggles like any other.
    Kwame Alexander and James Patterson, two heavy-hitters in children’s literature, join
    forces to vividly depict his life up to age seventeen in both prose and verse, including his
    childhood friends, struggles in school, the racism he faced, and his discovery of boxing.

    The Living Literature performance will be followed by some discussion, origami butterflies and bookmark crafts, and the reading of some of Muhammad Ali’s favorite poems.

    This program is free and open to the public, and a free copy of the book will be given to the first fifteen people who register.

    The outdoor summer concert series is back at Weaver! The Governor’s Own 88th Army Band will be performing on Wednesday, August 25th from 6:30-7:30pm.

    The Governor’s Own 88th Army Band remains the final product of the consolidation of three former army bands. The oldest band dates back to 24 June 1892 in the brigade of the Rhode Island Militia as the Bands, 1st & 2nd Regiments of Infantry. Re-designation into the Coast Artillery Corps took place on 4 November 1908. The band mustered and entered into federal service on 5 August 1917. Redesigned the 88th Army Ground Forces Band occurred on 25 May 1944. The 88th Army Ground Forces Band became inactive on 1 June 1946 in Germany.

    The Camp Lee Band organized on 29 January 1930 under the 118th Engineers of the 43rd Division, Rhode Island Army National Guard. They moved to Camp Lee on 19 February 1942 where they disbanded that same year. The band reconstituted on 25 August 1945 under the Rhode Island Army National Guard.
