Is your child struggling to read, or do you need support in teaching them?

As part of a Comprehensive Literacy State Development Grant from the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE), East Providence Public Library, along with several other libraries in the state, received decodable books that will circulate to the public.

What are decodable books, and how do they help your child learn to read?

The science of learning to read emphasizes the importance of connecting sounds to letters, also known as phonics. Each decodable book focuses on specific phonics rules to build a solid foundation before moving on to more complex letter combinations. Beginning readers can easily sound out the words in decodable books, which helps them gain skills and confidence in reading.

The grant, in collaboration with Decoding Dyslexia Rhode Island (DDRI) and the Office of Library and Information Services (OLIS), provided the chosen libraries two different types of decodable materials that will be available to children and families to borrow.

The first is a BACKPACK LITERACY KIT (see above) consisting of 24 small decodable books, an English Phonics Code chart, a Roadmap to Reading booklet, and an instruction guide for adults.

The second is individual SETS OF DECODABLE BOOKS (see below) with each stage in a separate pouch. Stages progress from 1 all the way to 7.5, each containing 5 books that focus on specific rules and words.

Both the backpack literacy kits and the decodable book sets are available to be checked out from Weaver Library or Riverside Branch Library and brought home for three weeks at a time.

The library also provides READ & LISTEN BOOKS (see below) which are picture books with built-in audio players that provide narration and page-turn cues so kids can listen to the story and read along.
